VASTU SHASTRA

Vastu is a term that translates from the ancient Sanskrit language as “A place good for life”. Vastu-shastra originated in ancient India.
 
The system is mentioned in the Vedas, for example, in the Rigveda, the text of which was composed 3-3.5 thousand years ago. Much information about vastu is contained in the ancient Indian epic Mahabharata. The mythical founder of vastu-shastra is considered to be the sage-carpenter Mamuni Mayan, who discovered its principles thousands of years ago.
 
Vastu Shastra is considered a written part of the teachings of Vastu Vidya, a broader Hindu system of guidelines for architecture and design. In fact, it is a mixture of geometry, philosophy, religion and astrology.
To understand its principles, it is necessary to refer to the concept: “mandala”.
The directions in the mandala are related to the elements.
 
There are five spheres of energy, or five elements: water, air, fire, earth and space.
 
All of them are associated with both parts of the body and the sides of the light:
 
  • northeast – water;
  • southeast – fire;
  • and sunset – earth;
  • northwest – air;
  • the center is the cosmos, the universe.
It is believed that the deity Vastu Purusha resides in every part of the earth.
According to legend, he was a demon until the gods pressed him to the ground and he himself became a god. Purusha was lying with his head towards the north-east and his feet towards the south-west. According to vastu-shastra, the diagonal at home should run along this line.
North (“the roof of the world”) and east (the direction from which the sun begins to move) also play a special role in vastu.
 
According to Vastu, a house is a spiritual being, so it should be cared for like a living organism. If you perform your duties well, increase the level of vital energy (prana), then you can improve karma.
 
The influence of Vastu occurs at the following levels:

  • Physical. It manifests itself in tangible convenience and comfort.
  • Psychological. There is a feeling of peace, tranquility and confidence in a stable future.
  • Spiritual. The motivation to develop appears.
The first elements and their forms
 
Vastu Shastra is based on the understanding of the five elements: air, water, earth, fire and ether. Each of them has its own form, which is used to create a harmonious atmosphere at home or at the workplace.
 
  • Air (the first element). The shape is a straight line. It is used to create clear boundaries and corners, for example, for walls and doors. Straight lines can also be used to create a directed flow of energy in a room.
  • Water (the second element). The shape is a curved line. It is the basis of smooth and organic forms, which are most often found on furniture and decor. This element is involved in creating harmonic flows with continuous movement.
  • Earth (the third element). The shape is a square. It is used for the foundations of buildings and massive furniture to denote stability and durability. Another purpose of the square is to form clear boundaries and corners.
  • Fire (the fourth element). The shape is a triangle. The geometric shape, symbolizing dynamism and energy, looks good in the cooking area (near the stove). The element is indispensable if you want to create a directed flow of energy.
  • Ether (the fifth element). The shape is a circle. It is responsible for harmony and balance, so the element is often taken into account when placing tables. This is another source of uniform flow energy.
In order to create a harmonious environment in the house or office, it is necessary to ensure free inflow and outflow of energy.
Various methods and techniques are used for this.
 
  • Furniture placement. Furniture items should not block windows and doors. Chests of drawers, cabinets, tables, etc. should be placed so that the passages between them are free, and movement is not hindered.
  • Choice of color. Shades can affect the energy of the room. For example, bright and saturated colors encourage active actions, and calmer ones create a relaxed atmosphere. It is important to choose colors that correspond to the purpose of the room and the general style of the interior.
  • Use of plants. Flora takes part in creating a harmonious environment: leaves and flowers not only clean the air of pollution, but also protect against negative energy.
  • Placement of lighting. Warm soft light sets you up for rest and leisurely communication, cold white will help you concentrate and work productively. In addition to the main chandelier, there should be sconces, floor lamps and other light sources so that no area of ​​the room remains dark in the evening.

But this is not the best place for a bedroom, and it is not recommended to sleep with your head to the north. It is also not worth it to arrange the kitchen and dining room on this side of the light.
 
The northern part of the house promotes the assimilation of new knowledge and learning. A safe or savings placed here will surely multiply, and thieves will not encroach on valuables. Mirrors are a desirable element of the environment, they reflect the received positive energy and it spreads at home.
 
North-East
The elements are air and ether. The planet is Jupiter.
It affects the physical and psycho-emotional state. An altar is always arranged in the northeast. The rooms next to him are not cluttered with furniture – they have the bare essentials. The decoration is chosen in light, pastel colors. Mandatory element is water. It can be present in aquariums or vases with flowers.
The more windows on the northeast side, the better they increase the positive level of Vastu.
  
East
The elements are fire and ether. The planet is the Sun.
Here the Sun appears – the source of life, a symbol of strength and youth. A living room, a dining room or a child’s bedroom are placed here.
Emotions, psychological comfort and physiology are associated with the eastern direction. A long presence on this side of the house or apartment will help restore mental and physical strength.
 
The facade and front door should face east, then the house will have peace and stability. An open terrace is the best place for meditation and thinking about difficult situations.
 
the South-east
The element is fire. The planet is Venus.
According to Vastu, the southeast is an ideal place for a hearth. In modern houses and apartments, kitchens, heating systems and heating devices are placed here. The bathroom is not made, because the water takes away the positive flow.
Lighting should be carefully considered in a southeast room. A must-have element is an original lamp or chandelier symbolizing fire.
 
This part of the house is protected by Venus, the goddess of love.

South
The elements are fire and earth. Planet Mars.

Mars represents a destructive flow that can be transformed into the energy of goals and achievements.

Southwest
The element is earth. The planet is Rahu.
This part of the house is ruled by the demonic planet Rahu. It is not a celestial body in the classical sense. This is the point where the Moon crosses the Sun’s orbit as it moves from north to south. Such an orbital phenomenon was named Rahu.
 
The southwestern sector of the house protects against negativity, so massive furniture, toilets, storage systems and pantries are placed here.
 
It is strictly forbidden to arrange a kitchen or a living room in the southwest. Associated with pleasant communication and cooking, they risk turning into a zone of quarrels and emotional upheavals.
 
West
The element is air. The planet is Saturn.
The direction is associated with the event, finishing things after the working day and silence. Bedrooms and offices should be placed on the west side. In the living room combined with the kitchen, the western sector is considered optimal for the dining area.
 
It is not recommended to place a large number of windows or entrance doors on the west side, this can lead to an outflow of energy – finances, health and luck will go.
 
Saturn is a harsh planet, and therefore does not like clutter, so western rooms require especially careful cleaning.
 
In this area, a toilet, a garbage container, a wardrobe and bedside tables are appropriate.
 
Northwest
The element is air. The planet is the Moon.
Everything flows, moves and changes here, so the northwest is recommended for the garage, as well as the placement of air conditioning and ventilation systems.
 
In addition to the positive influx of energy, the presence of a negative flow is also possible. A person may feel discomfort, experience problems with finding a partner. To avoid this, storerooms and toilets cannot be located in the northwest.
