Narasimha Mantra
Description: The Narasimha-Kavacha mantra is a powerful protective mantra dedicated to Vishnu in the form of Narasimha – the man-lion (“Nara” – “man”, “simha” – “lion”).
The hymn first appears in the Brahmanda Purana and was written by King Prahlada, who was a great devotee of Vishnu.
In the wrathful form of Narasimha, Vishnu manifested himself to destroy the mighty demon, Prahlada’s father, Hiranyakashipa, who possessed many mystical powers and sowed fear among the hierarchy of the universe.
According to the legend, neither man nor animal could calm down the restless demon. That is why Vishnu incarnated as a man-lion and won the victory.
“Kavacha” translated from Sanskrit (कवच, kavaca) means shield or armor, chain mail, it acts like a mantra, the practitioner puts on armor. “Kavacha” is a type of hymn that relates to a particular Deity or Tradition associated with a Deity.
Often, kavachis are associated with rituals of purification and preparation for the beginning of sadhana, that is, the long and systematic practice of mantras.
The main purpose of protective hymns is to make spiritual practice more effective, free the practitioner from obstacles, overcome the difficulties of the path of self-development, and help him experience the qualities of the chosen form of concentration. During the practice of Kavachi, a special protective atmosphere is created, which promotes effective practice to achieve the desired result.
